This technical session will discuss elements of designing and building a custom CMS that leverages technology and existing web data from sources such as Flickr and Wikipedia to automate research and increase time spent writing original content.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most important factors when making a decision about a CMS: context of your content business and process of content production.<\/li>\n<li>Tools to evaluate what CMS you need for your business<\/li>\n<li>&quot;A computer based system that allows one or more people to manage the online publication, storage and display of content.&quot;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Landscape:<br \/><\/strong>Many CMS systems out there for many different types of content (from many sources). The focus of these will be mainly people-created editorial content.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The production process<br \/><\/strong>This process is very important and often overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>Data collection (going out and getting the raw data) &gt;<br \/>Workflow management (assigning tasks and divvy up labor) &gt;<br \/>Research (follow up with different sources) &gt;<br \/>Write &gt;<br \/>Review &gt;<br \/>Publish!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why did we go down the custom CMS route?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Events are a moving target with a finite shelf-life<\/li>\n<li>Incentive structure for UGC in events is small<\/li>\n<li>Opinionated content for target market<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What didn&#8217;t matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Amount of data (most CMSs can handle all amounts of data)<\/li>\n<li>Size of web site<\/li>\n<li>Complexity of idea<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What did matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Data aggregation from multiple sources<\/li>\n<li>Workflow management between editors<\/li>\n<li>Reducing research time per event<\/li>\n<li>Search Engine Optimization (made it really easy in the system)<\/li>\n<li>Lead generation and contact management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Getting the raw data:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Automate and aggregate non-editorial elements (have it easy to access and it comes together somewhat automatically)<\/li>\n<li>Create different processes for different parts of the information<\/li>\n<li>Dealing with issues of quality and duplication (example: deciding what news stories to write real-time)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Workflow management<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dividing tasks, vertically segmenting, prioritizing and assigning responsibility<\/li>\n<li>Incorporate automated steps into workflow process<\/li>\n<li>Reduce or remove the time that is spent by humans prioritizing the information (bigger events need longer lead time)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Reducing research time: the golden ratio<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Give editors research resources without leaving the page: wikipedia, flickr, and google news<\/li>\n<li>Rise of real-time news as part of this process increases relevancy and quality<\/li>\n<li>Re-purposing data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Thinking about SEO<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tools to aid editors in the production of content for SEO (keyword research)<\/li>\n<li>Suggested linking (try to pull in other pages inside or outside similar links to make it as efficient as possible)<\/li>\n<li>Major benefits if you&#8217;re not using off-the-shelf systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Monday, March 15, 2010Presenters:Alex Will &#8211; Spoonfed MediaHenry Erskine Crum &#8211; Spoonfed Media Description:An effective content management system is a must for any content-based web service.
